In 2018, #Georgia experienced nearly 70 inches of rainfall which is far more rain than the state typically averages, according to the National Weather Service. In December alone, #Atlanta had 11 inches of rain. Rain is nothing new to Georgians, but it can definitely cause dangerous driving conditions. As if traffic in Atlanta is not bad enough, throw rain into the mix and you can have some serious problems. We are here to make sure that you are aware of how heavy rain can impact your commute and what you can do to be as safe as possible when the showers hit.
Things To Remember:
The risk of car crashes increases any time the roads are wet.
Water can mix with oil on the road causing especially slick roads, which can in turn impede your breaking ability.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms reduce your visibility while driving.
Flash flooding can cause you to hydroplane and completely lose control of your vehicle.
Safety Steps You Can Take:
Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
Rushing in the rain only puts yourself at risk. On rainy days, know that traffic will be heavier and you will be better off leaving a few minutes earlier than usual.
Stay alert.
You never know how other drivers are going to behave in dangerous weather, and the best thing you can do for yourself is to drive alert and aware of everything going on around you.
Reduce your speed.
Although the speed limit may say 45 miles per hour, it is always best to slow your speed while driving in rainy conditions.
Regularly check your tire pressure & tread.
This ensures that your tires are safe and able to maintain traction.
Give other vehicles plenty of room.
Other drivers can easily lose control or slam on their brakes at any given time, especially when it is raining, so always leave enough space for you to slow down or stop to avoid an accident.
Avoid using cruise control.
It tends to take away your full attention from the road, which can easily lead to a collision.
If you are involved in an accident while driving in the rain, you have the right to hold other drivers accountable. Contact Kaufman Law to discuss your case for FREE.
