Productive Alternatives For Your Commute

Updated: Apr 18, 2019

When living in the #Atlanta area you become far too accustomed to long commutes to work, school, and sometimes even the grocery store. Every morning and afternoon we are hit with that dreaded feeling of having to sit in traffic for what seems like forever. Seriously, if you miss an exit there goes 30 more minutes off of your life!

Although commuting from place to place and sitting in traffic for extended amounts of time can be irritating, we have come up with a few ways to be productive during this time, and they are much safer than catching up on emails.

1. Listen to podcasts or audio books.

You can download these on your phone and play them in your car. There are so many podcasts out there nowadays and almost every book written comes with an audio edition. If you aren’t sure where to look, give audible.com a shot. Spotify also has a great selection of podcasts. You can also subscribe to our podcast, Torts to Courts, on iTunes by clicking here.

2. Learn a new language.

Many people say they wish they knew how to speak another language, but don’t have time. Well, this is a great place to start and turns the time you spend commuting into something valuable. The Rosetta Stone app makes this so simple!

3. Listen to a radio talk show.

There are so many morning talk shows that air quite early to give listeners a good start to their day. Many of these shows give you the news you need, as well as keeping things light hearted with the hope of putting you in a good mood before your day ahead. The Jeff and Jenn Show is one of our personal favorites!

4. Set Goals

It is so important to prepare your mind for what your day is going to consist of. Use your commute as a time to mentally prepare for the day that is ahead of you. It can also be beneficial to set goals for the day so that you know exactly what you want to achieve. This will also allow you to focus on certain things right from the start.

5. Unwind

Many people take work home with them, but our minds need a break at some point. During your commute home in the afternoon, take time to quit looking at emails or taking phone calls, and instead let go of the stress from the day. Sometimes, turning off the radio, podcasts, audio books, and phone calls and just soaking in the silence is a great way to unwind. Instead of focusing on listening to something else, listen to your own personal thoughts and focus on you.
